Supermarket Art and Craft

What is it

Art and Craft Activity: Make their very own shopping basket!

Things needed

  • Recycled tissue box or shoe box

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Paint or colour pencils

  • String

  • Hole puncher

  • Coloured or crepe paper

Teaching Objectives

  • Developing simple art and craft skills

  • Practice painting, colouring, cutting, and pasting

  • Practice reading off a shopping list and counting the correct number of items

  • Identifying typical items found at the supermarket

How to use

1) Cut and paste the basket on pages 1 and 2 and glue them onto a recycled tissue box or shoe box

  • Colour, paint or decorate the basket and the box before pasting

2) Punch 4 holes and use string to make the handle for the basket

  • You can also use other methods to create the handle such as folding paper and attaching it with a stapler!

3) Practice cutting skills by guiding your child to cut the food items out

  • Print out more pictures on your own to extend the variety of items!

  • Practice tearing coloured or crepe paper to create a base at the bottom of the basket

4) Use the customisable shopping list on the last page to list items that your child will need to fill the basket with (eg: 2 apples)

  • Practice counting

  • Practice retrieving specific items

Teaching tips

  • Make cutting simple by starting off first and letting your child finish up the last snip, or cut the curved parts first for them to practice cutting straight lines

  • If needed, identify the items one by one and read off the shopping list together

  • Use hand over hand prompt if your child is new to art and craft activities

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language - Point to the apple

  • Expressive Language - What is this?
