Teaching Objectives

Develop numeracy concepts
How to use
Cut out the sea creatures
Introduce the activity to your child by saying “We are going to practise making patterns”
Get your child to verbalise the pattern
- AB pattern: fish, crab, fish, crab, fish...
- ABC pattern: green, purple, green, purple, green…
- AAB pattern: shark, shark, whale, shark, shark...
Place the available options in front of him and ask “What comes next?” or “What goes in here?” while pointing to the box
Allow him to pick his answer and place it in the box. Verbalise the pattern together again.
It is okay if your child picks the wrong one. Read out the pattern to him and highlight the error. Children can learn from mistakes too!
Teaching tips
Repeatedly verbalise the pattern for your child to help him understand the pattern
Continue to practise the same type of pattern to ensure consistency before introducing a new pattern.
Make it more fun by asking your child to create more patterns using different manipulatives or even drawing them out!
Continue to point out different patterns everywhere to increase your child’s awareness of patterns all around him. This helps him to understand why he needs to learn patterning
Cut outs are provided
