What is it:
Test your child’s ability to listen to instructions before performing the appropriate action
Teaching Objectives:
To discriminate between items as number of items in the field increases
To differentiate across various types of instructions
To sustain attention required to listen and act upon the instruction
How to use:
Assess your child’s knowledge of the different objects listed in the printable before giving instructions
Give various types of instructions to the child. (E.g., “Colour/Cross/Circle/Tick/Underline the object)
Teaching Tips:
Ensure that the environment is free of potential distractors (sounds, toys, etc) to optimise your child’s listening
Guide your child’s hands with yours to perform the action as instructed if child is unsure of what to do (E.g. strokes needed to cross/tick/underline/circle an object)
Start off with 1 or 2 familiar instructions before adding other instructions
Embed more learning opportunities:
Place your child’s favourite toys at different parts of your house and get him/her to find it (E.g. “Find your soft toy on the chair in the living room”)
Get your child to describe the things in the environment (E.g. “What colour is the bed in your room?”)
Give instructions such as retrieval of objects in your home (E.g. “Pass me the cup on the table in the kitchen”)
Read to your child and ask questions along the way to assess your child’s state of attention and listening ability
