Labels and Actions at a Shopping Mall

What is it

A set of worksheets with different instructions to teach children to identify common labels (people, items, places) and action verbs that can be found in a shopping mall.

Teaching Objectives

  • Expand vocabulary about the shopping mall, and improve literacy and numeracy skills

  • Sustained attention for worksheet tasks

  • Apply and use action words (e.g. pushing, carrying, paying, watching) to describe their actions or the actions of others

  • Learn categories and sorting of daily items to places in a shopping mall (e.g. fruits in supermarket, bear in toy shop)

How to use

  • Explain what the worksheet is about and begin from easier levels to allow your child to familiarize with the different instructions

  • Highlight the worksheet prompts to teach your child what needs to be done (e.g. drawing lines through the maze, matching with lines, cutting and pasting)

  • Read out the labels and action words with your child before beginning to write, trace or match

  • Encourage your child to expressively name the labels and action verbs before, during, and after completing the worksheets (model if necessary)

Teaching tips

  • Go to a shopping mall and encourage your child to point out and describe what they see around - items, places, or actions

  • Use the verbs during your day out to describe different actions (e.g. shopping, carrying, finding, watching, eating) to promote learning through real life associations

  • Create your own simple shopping list and guide your child to find familiar items in the different locations and stores of a shopping mall

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language - “Point to the cinema”/ “Find the toy store”

  • Expressive language – point to a label picture and ask “What is this?”, “How many?”

  • General knowledge – “Where can we find a jacket?”
