Labels and Action Words at School (Outside the classroom)

What is it

A set of worksheets with different instructions to teach children to identify common labels that are found in school (school attire, locations) as well as the specific labels found in each school location (art room - paint, glue, crayons/ gym - cones, ball, whistle)

Teaching Objectives

  • Expand vocabulary about the different locations in school and identify the purpose of each location

  • Apply and use action words (e.g. climbing, throwing, hitting) to describe the actions seen in the worksheets

  • Encourage children to name common classroom locations and action words when they see it in real life

  • Sustained attention for longer worksheets

How to use

  • Explain what the worksheet is about and begin from easier levels to allow your child to familiarize with the different instructions (circle, trace, match).

  • Highlight the worksheet prompts to teach your child what needs to be done (e.g. with matching with lines, tracing)

  • Read out the labels and action words with your child to familiarize him/her with the terms.

  • Make learning more fun with your child by copying some of these common actions that are commonly done during PE lessons!

  • Encourage your child to expressively name the labels and action verbs before, during and after completing the worksheets (model if necessary)

Teaching tips

  • Work on generalization by showing your child different pictures of each location in school to find out if they can identify them correctly. If they have difficulties identifying the locations, emphasize on the common labels that are found in each location. E.g. library - bookshelf, books, tables, chairs.

Here are some videos:

Embed more learning opportunities

  • Receptive language - “point to the library”

  • Expressive language – point to a label picture and ask “What is this?”

  • Receptive instructions – Ask your child "can you show me jumping?"
